[origin: EP0355430A2] An aluminium valve tappet of an internal combustion engine has a surface coating in the form of a nickel dispersion layer provided with a hardening agent. Between the aluminium base material (1) and the surface coating (4), an interlayer (3) is provided, whose hardness is between that of the aluminium-based material and that of the surface coating. In this way, the coated valve tappet withstands extreme surface pressures and shear stresses.
