[origin: EP0356564A1] In a mechanical press with double crank drive, the latter possesses a drive unit (1) comprising a flywheel (2), a hydraulic clutch/brake unit (4) equipped with a clutch shaft (3), a planet gear (5) and a crankshaft (6). In such a press, particularly compact dimensions and optimum force application are achieved if two mutually coaxial drive units (1), of identical design except for their mirror symmetry, are arranged between the two cranks (7), symmetrically to the median plane of the press, their clutch shafts (3) are combined at their mutually facing shaft ends (8) to form a single shaft, and their clutch/brake units (4) are fed by a shared central supply (9) of hydraulic medium. <IMAGE>
