A process for applying decorative coatings to flat materials, in particular moulded laminates or derived timber boards, to produce a marble effect by pressing a carrier sheet, impregnated with curable aminoplastic resin and coated with thermoplastic or thermoset synthetic resin onto the base to be coated at melting and curing temperatures for the resins, a) a carrier sheet being used which has two layers, one on top of the other, of a transparent, thermoplastic or thermoset synthetic resin, which also has good flowing characteristics under pressing conditions, the layer facing the carrier sheet containing an imbricated (lamellar) pigment in a quantity of 2 to 40 % by weight, relative to synthetic resin, and the outer layer of synthetic resin being free from such pigments, and b) the pressing being carried out by a pressing tool which has no surface profiling. <??>The invention relates further to the carrier sheets containing synthetic resin and used in the process according to the invention. <??>The coated materials have a marbled surface and are particularly suitable for manufacturing doors, furniture, table tops, facade elements, exhibition stands or for decorating rooms, such as foyers, waiting rooms or counter rooms.

Verfahren zur dekorativen Beschichtung von flächigen Werkstoffen, insbesondere Schichtpreßstoffen oder Holzwerkstoffplatten unter Erzielung eines marmorierten Effektdekors, durch Aufpressen einer mit härtbarem Aminoplastharz imprägnierten und mit thermoplastischem oder duroplastischem Kunstharz beschichteten Trägerbahn auf den zu beschichtenden Untergrund bei Schmelz- bzw. Aushärtungstemperaturen für die Harze, wobei man a) eine Trägerbahn verwendet, welche zwei übereinander liegende Schichten eines transparenten, thermoplastischen oder duroplastischen und unter Verpressungsbedingungen gut fließfähigen Kunstharzes aufweist, wobei die der Trägerbahn zugewendete Schicht ein schuppenförmiges (blättchenförmiges) Pigment in einer Menge von 2 bis 40 Gew.-%, bezogen auf Kunstharz, enthält und die äußere Kunstharzschicht frei von derartigen Pigmenten ist und b) die Verpressung mit einem Preßwerkzeug durchführt, welches keine Oberflächenprofilierung aufweist. Die Erfindung betrifft ferner die bei dem erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren verwendeten Kunstharz enthaltenden Trägerbahnen. Die beschichteten Werkstoffe weisen eine marmorierte Oberfläche auf und eignen sich besonders zur Herstellung von Türen, Möbeln, Tischplatten, Fassadenelementen, Ausstellungsständen oder zur Ausgestaltung von Räumen, wie Foyers, Warteräumen oder Schalterräumen.
