[origin: EP0359218A2] A display device conveys a novel appearance of the display due to a structure comprising a moving pointer (2,2'), luminous elements (4) mounted on the pointer (2,2') and linearly aligned transversely to the direction of movement of the pointer (2,2'), and a control circuit which switches the luminous elements (4) on or off during the pointer movement in dependence on the instantaneous position of the pointer (2,2') for the purpose of forming display symbols. <IMAGE>
