[origin: EP0363618A1] The shaft (12) of a turnstile (10) can be locked against rotation in either direction by means of a controllable locking device. A braking device (40) is provided, which acts directly or indirectly on the turnstile shaft (12) and can be actuated via an electrical signal. A signal emission device (31), in particular an incremental phase-angle sensor (32), emits an electrical signal in the event of a movement impulse in the respective barrier of the turnstile (10), which signal directly or indirectly actuates the braking device (40). <IMAGE>
