Abstract (en)
An improved cable hoist apparatus (10) has a sheave (22) movably connected relative to a frame (50) to bias the cable (12) in a circumferential groove (58) in the sheave (22). A biasing means on the frame compresses the cable (12) in the sheave groove (58) with the amount of force depending upon the tension in the cable (12). In this regard, the sheave (22) is positioned relative to the frame (50) as a function of the cable tension such that the greater the cable tension, the greater the biasing force on the cable. However, the biasing means can include a plurality of rollers (62, 94) to regulate the biasing force. A reeving spring (142) can be used in conjunction with the biasing means to allow reeving of the hoist (10) when the cable is unloaded. The hoist apparatus optimally incorporates certain advantageous safety features (124, 162....). These include a cable brake activated and released depending upon the position of the sheave and a motor shutoff as a function of overload and/or underload.
