The can opener (1) has, in its casing (2), a drive unit which consists of an electromotor (32) fastened on a support plate (41), a gearing (33) and a shaft (42) driving the transport wheel (17). The longitudinal axis (8) of the casing (2), along which axis the electromotor (32), the wheel mechanism (33) and the shaft (42) are arranged, forms, together with the direction defined by the drive shaft (70) of the electromotor (32), of the spindles (61, 62, 63) of the gearing (33), and of the shaft (42) of the transport wheel (17), an angle (a) which is smaller than 90 DEG . Der Dosenöffner (1) weist in seinem Gehäuse (2) eine Antriebseinheit auf, die aus einem auf einer Trägerplatte (41) befestigten Elektromotor (32), einem Getriebe (33) und einer das Transportrad (17) antreibenden Welle (42) besteht. Die Längsachse (8) des Gehäuses (2), entlang derer der Elektromotor (32), das Rädergetriebe (33) und die Welle (42) angeordnet sind, bildet mit der durch die Antriebswelle (70) des Elektromotors (32), der Achse (61, 62, 63) des Getriebes (33) und der Welle (42) des Transportrades (17) festgelegten Richtung einen Winkel (a), der kleiner 90° ist. Ein Messer wird beim Betätigen eines Schaltknopfes um eine Drehachse zum Transportrad (17) geschwenkt.
