[origin: EP0368179A2] A process and an apparatus for direct image formation of a printing forme in an offset machine are specified. A transfer belt is arranged between an image dot transfer unit, which causes a dot melting of a substance influencing the ink/water affinity due to the digital image information transmitted by an electronic image store, and a printing cylinder, on the surface of which said substance produces a printed image. On said transfer belt the melted and once again solidified substance parts are stored intermediately and subsequently transferred to the printing cylinder by renewed energy input by means of an image delivery unit. Since the latter transfer takes place in a linear or planar manner, it proceeds far more quickly than in the image dot melting of the substance. Thus considerable temporal and economic advantages can be achieved compared to a known process with direct application of an image dot transfer unit to a printing cylinder. <IMAGE>
