[origin: EP0368515A1] An apparatus for supporting a tubular member such as a casing string (10) within another tubular member such as a wellhead (11), comprising a generally tubular tool (15) which can be lowered into the annular space between the member (10, 11), a slip carrier (16) supported from the tool and a slip assembly (17) carried by the slip carrier. The slip assembly includes a slip bowl (40) which can be supported against one of the tubular members and one or more slip elements (44) which can be urged into wedging engagement between the slip bowl and the other tubular element. The slip elements (44) are normally supported by the slip carrier (16) in a non-engaged position and the tool includes means operable to urge the slip elements (44) into the wedging engagement. A method of supporting a casing string within a well is disclosed which includes the steps of landing the slip bowl on the casinghead shoulder, actuating the tool to force the slip element into engagement between the casing and the slip bowl and retrieving the tool and slip carrier.
