Abstract (en)
The surface of a substance (19) is heated by locating it at one focal point (6) of an elliptical reflector (3) and subjecting it to radiation from a source (4) located at the other focal point (4A). Relative movement between the reflector and the surface may be effected to heat successive portions of the surface. The substance to be heated may be a metal which is subsequently welded.
