[origin: US4993230A] A cooling apparatus utilizing the Joule-Thomson effect contains a lead conduit including an inlet end connectable to a source of pressurized gas, and an outlet end, a relief nozzle provided at the outlet end of the lead conduit whereby pressurized gas inflowing through the lead conduit is depressurized at the relief nozzle with cooling, a return for the cooled and depressurized gas, and a countercurrent heat exchanger by which the pressurized gas inflowing through the lead conduit is in heat conductive contact with the cooled and depressurized gas outflowing through the return. Peltier elements serve for additional cooling of the inlet end of the lead conduit and have cold sides which are in immediate contact with the inlet end of the lead conduit. A heat exchanger is provided at the warm sides of the Peltier elements and is throughflown by the gas from the return.

Eine Kühlvorrichtung, bei welcher der Joule - Thomson Effekt ausgenutzt wird, enthält eine Vorlaufleitung (28) mit einem Einlaßende (40) und einem Auslaßende, deren Einlaßende (40) mit einer Druckgasquelle verbindbar ist, eine Entspannungsdüse (30), die an einem Auslaßende der Vorlaufleitung (28) vorgesehen ist, wobei über die Vorlaufleitung (28) zuströmendes Druckgas sich an der Entspannungsdüse (30) unter Abkühlung entspannt, einen Rücklauf für das abgekühlte und entspannte Gas, und einen Gegenstrom - Wärmetauscher, durch welchen das über die Vorlaufleitung (28) zuströmende Druckgas in wärmeleitendem Kontakt mit dem über den Rücklauf abströmenden, abgekühlten und entspannten Gas steht. Zum zusätzlichen Kühlen des Einlaßendes (40) der Vorlaufleitung (28) dienen Peltier - Elemente (48), deren kalte Seiten (50) in unmittelbarem Kontakt mit dem Einlaßende (40) der Vorlaufleitung (40) stehen. An den warmen Seiten (52) der Peltier- Elemente (48) sind Wärmetauschermittel (54) vorgesehen, die von dem Gas aus dem Rücklauf durchströmt werden.
