La présente invention concerne un système d'entraînement de chariots mobiles sur un rail et son procédé de mise en oeuvre. Le système assure le passage d'une première zone, dans laquelle les chariots sont rapprochés, à une deuxième zone dans laquelle les chariots sont écartés, et inversement. Il est caractérisé en ce qu'il comprend: au moins deux chariots (6, 6') reliés par un élément (26) de liaison souple ou pliable; des taquets (15) d'entraînement des chariots via un organe escamotable au rangement, disposés sur une chaîne (13) motrice à intervalles prédéterminés. L'invention concerne également une application à une installation de rangement et de mise en place de sièges ainsi qu'à son procédé de mise en oeuvre.
