[origin: WO9000309A1] An ICR ion trap has side plates (1) parallel to an axis (Z) and end plates (5, 6) perpendicular to the axis (Z). A voltage source (7) makes it possible to apply capture potentials to the side and end plates. Additional electrode plates (8, 9) to which capture potentials of opposite polarity to the end plates can be applied are arranged at a distance from the end plates, thereby forming an outer space in which ions of opposite sign are captured. After analysis and elimination of the ions present in the inner chamber, the ions of opposite sign are captured in the inner chamber and analysed. It is also possible to observe recombination reactions between ions of opposite sign.
