[origin: WO9007996A1] The method is implemented in a mould comprising two side walls (25) consisting each of a support (30) and of a graphite block (31), as well as a plurality of struts of which an upper strut (20) is interleaved between the blocks (31); the extremities (20b) of the upper strut (20) and of the front strut are interleaved between two half-chills (41, 42) which receive a dead-head of liquid metal at the end of the casting. Elastic members (43, 44) carried by the supports (30) exert a force on the struts for clamping the half-chills (41, 42); after the slab has started to solidify, said tightening or clamping force is decreased by side jacks (52) which eliminate any resistance to contraction of the slab and thus avoid the formation of cracks at the slab/dead-head transition.
