A device (1) for receiving and distributing banknotes (2) has a tester (8), switches (13 to 16), a transport system (19 to 31), a control device (12) with a storage part (35), and a single banknote store (9, 10, 13, 14, 20, 23, 25, 31, 32, 33) for various predetermined value steps in the same cash stack (34). The transport system allows a transfer of the banknotes (2) in the banknote store (9, 10, 13, 14, 20, 23, 25, 31, 32, 33), the uppermost banknote (2) being removed from a cash stack (34) of the banknote store (9, 10, 13, 14, 20, 23, 25, 31, 32, 33) and being returned to the banknote store (9, 10, 13, 14, 20, 23, 25, 31, 32, 33) through a cash entry (32) by means of a conveyor band (19) and a transport band (27). The banknote store (9, 10, 13, 14, 20, 23, 25, 31, 32, 33) is transferred until the banknote (2) of the predetermined value step which has to be distributed is fed into the transport system (19 to 31). Before being distributed through a distribution orifice (4), the banknote (2) is checked by means of the tester (8). Eine Vorrichtung (1) zur Annahme und Abgabe von Banknoten (2) weist ein Prüfgerät (8), Weichen (13 bis 16), ein Transportsystem (19 bis 31), eine Steuereinrichtung (12) mit einem Speicherteil (35) und einen einzigen Banknotenspeicher (9, 10, 13, 14, 20, 23, 25, 31, 32, 33) für verschiedene vorbestimmte Wertstufen im gleichen Kassenstapel (34) auf. Das Transportsystem ermöglicht ein Umstapeln der Banknoten (2) im Banknotenspeicher (9, 10, 13, 14, 20, 23, 25, 31, 32, 33), wobei die oberste Banknote (2) von einem Kassenstapel (34) des Banknotenspeichers (9, 10, 13, 14, 20, 23, 25, 31, 32, 33) entfernt und mittels eines Förderbandes (19) und eines Transportbandes (27) durch einen Kasseneingang (32) in den Banknotenspeicher (9, 10, 13, 14, 20, 23, 25, 31, 32, 33) zurückgeführt wird. Der Banknotenspeicher (9, 10, 13, 14, 20, 23, 25, 31, 32, 33) wird so lange umgestapelt, bis die zur Ausgabe benötigte Banknote (2) der vorbestimmten Wertstufe in das Transportsystem (19 bis 31) eingespeist wird. Vor der Abgabe durch eine Abgabeöffnung (4) wird die Banknote (2) mittels des Prüfgeräts (8) überprüft. Nicht identifizierbares Gut wird bei der Annahme beispielsweise über eine Rückgabestrecke (28) in eine Rückgabeschale (5) transportiert.
