[origin: EP0380046A2] The counter has a rotating element with an optical reflectivity which periodically changes along its circumference or a changing optical transparency. A light beam (LE) is directed onto the rotating element and the reflected or transmitted light beam (LR) is analysed with respect to the periodicity of the light intensity. From the period determined, the speed of rotation of the rotating element is determined. To increase the accuracy and the resolving capability of the method, a light beam (LE) consisting of coherent light is used which can be generated, for example, by a laser semiconductor diode (2). The reflected light beam (LR) is received via a photoreceiver (5) and supplied to an evaluating device (6-7-8).
