[origin: EP0380774A2] The invention relates to the regulation of the liquid metal level in the pouring basin 2 of a continuous casting plant and provides that the liquid metal level 4 should be measured continuously in contactless fashion via an eddy-current sensor 5, that the eddy-current sensor 5 should be calibrated periodically by measurement involving contact, via an electrode 8 which can be raised and lowered, and that the passage of the electrode 8 through a fixed point, the point A, be monitored by means of a laser beam 14.
