For a collapsible wheelchair (10) having a pair of front wheels, (18) an independently powered drive system (20) comprising a drive wheel (22) to be rotatably mounted in place of one of the front wheels, (18) apparatus (34) for rotatably mounting the drive wheel onto the wheelchair, (10) motive apparatus (26) mounted in association with the apparatus (34) for rotatably mounting for rotating the drive wheel (22) in a selected direction corresponding to a selected direction of travel of the wheelchair, (10) clutch apparatus (50) for selectively disengaging the motor (26) from the drive wheel, (22) a power source for the motive apparatus, (26) and drive system control apparatus, the drive system (20) being characterized by compactness thereof, thereby permitting the wheelchair (10) to be collapsed while the drive system (20) is mounted thereon.
