[origin: EP0383045A1] For the lateral alignment of a fabric selvedge during sewing with a sewing machine (4, 6), there is a guide device (2) which can be moved perpendicularly relative to the direction of transport of the fabric (S), in order to press the fabric gently against an abutment (16) designed, for example, as a driven running roller and capable of generating a variable counterpressure. The guide device contains a bead chain 18 guided round two chain wheels. The beads are mounted on a plastic cable, so that they can rotate with the transported fabric. Rotation of the chain wheels causes the lower strand of the chain 18 and therefore the fabric S to be shifted laterally, in order to obtain the desired aligning effect. <IMAGE>
