[origin: EP0383672A1] Flat light source, characterised in that it comprises: - an evacuated enclosure (1) bounded by a lateral wall (2) and two flat parallel insulating walls (3, 4); - on each previous flat wall, and inside the enclosure (1), a conductive electrode (5, 6) covered with an insulating layer (7, 8), one at least of these two wall-electrode-insulating layer assemblies being transparent; - on one of the insulating layers (8), a layer (9) of a cathodoluminescent material; - in the vicinity of the lateral wall (2) and exterior to the two conductive electrodes (5, 6), an electron source (11); - a voltage source (10) allowing two distinct potentials (Vanode, Vrest) to be applied alternately to the two conductive electrodes (5, 6), so that the electrons emitted by the said electron source are collected alternately by the said electrodes. <IMAGE>
