According to the method, the distance between the shaft (14) of the grinding wheel (13) and the shaft (5) carrying a finished lens (7) in contact with the said grinding wheel is measured by means of a microprocessor (18) for controlling the actuator, by bringing the tip (9) into contact with the template (8), a gauge disc (20) being mounted coaxially with the grinding wheel (13) on the shaft (14) of the latter in order to measure the centre distance by bringing the gauge disc into contact with a finished lens. <IMAGE>
