[origin: EP0393759A2] For the simple and precise adjustment of a print gap in a printer, e.g. a matrix needle printer, it is proposed a) that the print head is moved several times back and forth between two switch points and is moved at the same time forwards in the direction of the print abutment, b) that the contact between the print abutment and the print head is determined by changing a parameter characterising the back and forth movement, c) that this change leads to the stoppage of the forward movement when a certain value is reached, and d) that, starting from this position with the print gap "zero", the print head is moved back by the desired value of the print gap. <IMAGE>
