Process for the preparation of 1-(2-chloroethyl)-2-methyl- 5-nitroimidazole by reaction of di-2-chloroethyl sulphate with an imidazole derivative of general formula: <IMAGE> (X denotes a hydrogen atom or a radical which can be removed by acidic hydrolysis or by alcoholysis), followed by acidic hydrolysis or alcoholysis of the product obtained.
