[origin: EP0404035A2] The powered screwdriver has a gearbox 4 which is actuated as a function of torque and has two drive branches of different transmission ratio. The two drive branches are switched on or off by two couplings 32, 48, each one of which is arranged in a drive branch. Both couplings have a common moveable coupling part 36 which is pretensioned in such a way that one of the two couplings is always engaged and the other coupling disengaged. Planetary gears 21, 26 are used in the gearbox 4 to obtain a compact design. <IMAGE>
