The data carriers are transported to and fro between various stations of the data carrier archive by a control device of the data carrier archive. The stations of the data carrier archive comprise at least one data carrier store and one write/read station for the data carriers. In order to improve the availability of the data carriers, each transport operation corresponds to at least one transport function, a priority is assigned to each transport function, transport functions with high priority are executed with low priority transport functions, and when the computer requests a data carrier in the write/read station, at least the immediate transport between the write/read station and another station is executed with a transport of highest priority.

Un procédé sert à exploiter un système d'archivage automatique de supports de données associé en tant que banque de données à une installation informatique. Les supports de données sont transportés en plusieurs sens entre diverses stations du système par un dispositif de manutention dont les opérations de transport sont comandées par un dispositif de commande d'archivage de supports de données. Les stations d'archivage de supports de données comprennent au moins un magasin de supports de données et une station d'écriture/lecture de supports de données. Afin d'améliorer la mise à disposition des supports de données, chaque opération de transport correspond à au moins une fonction de transport, chaque fonction de transport reçoit un ordre de priorité, les fonctions de transport de haute priorité sont exécutées avant des fonctions de transport de basse priorité, et lorsque l'installation informatique demande un support de données dans la station d'écriture/lecture, au moins le transport immédiat entre la station d'écriture/lecture et une autre station est exécutée avec une fonction de transport de priorité absolue.
