[origin: EP0405086A1] To provide water of the lowest water hardness for the clear-rinse subprogram, in a program-controlled dish-washing machine having a softening device, consisting of an ion exchanger, a salt-supply container and a regenerating water supply container, this dish-washing machine being actuable by means of rinsing programs selectable from the following subprograms: prerinsing, cleaning, intermediate rinsing, clear rinsing, drying, addition of a quantity of brine for regenerating the ion exchanger and addition of a quantity of rerinsing water for rinsing out the exchanged hardness formers from the regenerated ion exchanger, the subprogram for addition of a quantity of brine for regenerating the ion exchanger is incorporated during or after the cleaning subprogram, and the cleaning subprogram, supplemented by the subprogram for addition of a quantity of brine for regenerating the ion exchanger is followed by the subprogram for addition of a quantity of rerinsing water for rinsing out the exchanged hardness formers from the regenerated ion exchanger. <IMAGE>
