[origin: EP0410827A1] Washing machine or drier, in which the laundry load in the drum is determined by measuring the moment of inertia of the laundry in relation to the axis of rotation of this drum. The drive motor (10) of the drum is of the universal type and is supplied with alternating current (11). The speed of this motor is set by a phase-controlled command by means of a microprocessor (13). The latter also determines the moment of inertia from the value of the phase angle and from the value of the supply voltage. To overcome the inaccuracy occurring as a result of variations in the supply voltage, the latter is measured, preferably by the sole utilisation of the data already available in the microprocessor. <IMAGE>
