[origin: WO8910982A1] An arc-melting method is taught for the formation of metallic-second phase composite materials. The method involves the formation of an intermediate composite material comprising a relatively high loading of second phase particles dispersed in a metal matrix. This intermediate material is then combined with an additional amount of metal and arc-melted to form a final composite comprising a lower loading of the second phase particles dispersed in a final metallic matrix. The final metallic matrix may be comprised of a metal, metal alloy, or intermetallic, while the second phase particles may comprise ceramic materials such as borides, carbides, nitrides, silicides, oxides or sulfides.

Le procédé de fusion à l'arc permet la formation de matériaux composites constitués d'une matrice métallique et de particules de seconde phase. Le procédé comprend la formation d'un matériau composite intermédiaire consistant en une charge relativement élevée de particules de seconde phase dispersées dans une matrice métallique. Ce matériau intermédiaire est ensuite combiné à une quantité additionnelle d'un métal puis il est fondu à l'arc pour former un composite final comprenant une charge réduite des particules de seconde phase dispersées dans une matrice métallique finale. La matrice métallique finale peut consister en un métal, un alliage métallique ou intermétallique, tandis que les particules de seconde phase peuvent consister en des matériaux céramiques tels que des borures, des carbures, des nitrures, des siliciures, des oxydes ou des sulfures.
