[origin: EP0413985A2] In a reel for the straight-edged coiling or uncoiling of metal strips onto or from a coil, in particular for coiling rolled hot strip 2, with a rotatably mounted driven mandrel 1, consisting essentially of a mandrel body 4, segments 13 and an expanding rod 5, the mandrel 1 being expandable in the radial direction by the expanding rod 5, which can be moved axially in the mandrel body 4, via a clutch 7 of a rotating drive 9, it is proposed to equip the mandrel 1 with a device 20 mechanically affecting the axial mobility of the expanding rod 5, for emergency expansion if the coil cannot readily be removed from the mandrel due to a malfunction. <IMAGE>
