Un automate de vente et de prêt, en particulier pour cassettes vidéo, comprend un bâti similaire à une armoire, deux compartiments superposés de stockage agencés dans le bâti pour contenir les boîtes de cassettes, un dispositif de transport de cassettes commandé par ordinateur verticalement et horizontalement mobile entre les deux compartiments pour recevoir et introduire les boîtes de cassettes dans un compartiment déterminé de stockage ou dans un puits d'entrée/sortie dans le bâti, ou pour les en sortir. Un dispositif de lecture lit les codes d'identification des cassettes et un champ de commande est agencé à l'extérieur du bâti pour sélectionner la cassette voulue, la demander ou la livrer. Le champ de commande comprend un clavier d'entrée et un affichage. Un chariot (46) de transport des cassettes peut se déplacer horizontalement ou verticalement le long de guides horizontaux ou verticaux dans le bâti (10) et passer de la verticale à l'horizontale dans les guides horizontaux ou verticaux. Son mécanisme d'entraînement peut être simultanément actionné dans le sens horizontal et dans le sens vertical. Un organe de traction et de poussée (153) agencé dans le chariot (46) de transport des cassettes transporte la boîte de cassette (44) entre un compartiment de stockage ou puits entrée/sortie et un espace de réception des cassettes du chariot (46) de transport des cassettes et vice-versa.
