[origin: EP0416167A1] The invention relates to an apparatus for the spiral sharpening of spiral-fluted cutting tools (40) with a variable diameter over the tool length and a constant spiral angle. The apparatus comprises a tool spindle (6), which is rotatably mounted in a spindle stock (10) displaceable in the axial direction (38) of the spindle, a guide bar (36) orientated at an adjustable angle to the displacement direction (38) of the spindle stock (10), a rotary drive device (14, 16, 18, 20) for the tool spindle (6), which can be actuated via a follower (24, 26) bearing against the guide bar (36), adjustably arranged on the spindle stock (10) and coupled to the rotary drive device, and a device for correcting the setting angle of the guide bar (36). For this purpose, the guide bar (36) is curved in the adjusting plane of the follower (24, 26) so that its setting angle changes continuously relative to the displacement direction (38). The curvature of the guide bar (36) can be adapted to any spiral-flute profiles of the tool (40) by suitable holding means. <IMAGE>
