[origin: EP0416463A1] In an internal combustion engine with camshafts (2, 3) and a mechanism for changing the phase of one (2) of the camshafts relative to a driving wheel (5), the mechanism comprising a hydraulic motor (7) and a hydraulic pump (10), free combination of the pump and hydraulic motor is made possible by the fact that the pump (10) is arranged structurally separate from the hydraulic motor (7) on a detachable crankcase cover (8) of the internal combustion engine and the crankcase cover (8) is provided with devices for the drive arrangement of the pump with the camshaft (3) controlling the exhaust valves. In one embodiment of the invention, the device is chosen for the drive arrangement of a pump (10) provided as a preassembled unit. In a further illustrative embodiment, the device is a component which is integrated into the crankcase cover of the internal combustion engine and, together with a part arranged on the driving camshaft, forms the pump.
