[origin: EP0416753A1] A master cylinder, particularly of the type in which the piston (10) is withdrawn from the bore (14), at least to the extent of providing a recuperation flowpath past a sealing ring (16) on the piston. The sealing ring (16) is axially and also preferably radially, floating between a bearing ring (30) (for maintaining piston alignment) and a shoulder (22) on the piston, the sealing ring being biased to urge a back face (20) (with respect to the forward piston stroke) into contact with a sealing surface of the piston. In response to such bias and also preferably an initial surge of pressure communicated to the radial clearance between the sealing ring and the piston, as the piston enters the bore, the sealing ring may be radially expansible to assist initial interference of the sealing ring with the cylinder.
