In a device for comminuting tree trunks and other parts of trees for composting, which has a cylindrical rotational element (2) which is mounted so as to be driveable in rotation in a housing chamber in the conveying path from at least one inlet shaft (4) to a discharge opening (Z) and which has comminuting tools (W) which project beyond its generating line, and is located with its axis of rotation approximately perpendicular to the conveying path, the comminution tools (W) on the rotational body (2) are constructed and arranged - in the tangential view of the rotational element (2) - at least when the rotational body is driven and in the case of a full rotation in such a way that they form a continuous impact strip (L). Bei einer Vorrichtung zum Zerkleinern von Stämmen und anderen Baumbestandteilen für die Kompostierung, die einen in einer Gehäusekammer im Förderweg von wenigstens einem Einlaßschacht (4) zu einer Auslaßöffnung (Z) einen zur Drehung antreibbar gelagerten, zylindrischen Drehkörper (2) aufweist, der über seine erzeugende Mantellinie vortretende Zerkleinerungswerkzeuge (W) aufweist, und mit seiner Drehachse annähernd senkrecht zum Förderweg liegt, sind die Zerkleinerungswerkzeuge (W) am Drehkörper (2) - in tangentialer Ansicht des Drehkörpers (2) - zumindest bei angetriebenem Drehkörper und einer vollen Umdrehung so ausgebildet und angeordnet, daß sie eine durchgehende Schlagleiste (L) bilden. Zweckmäßigerweise endet eine einlaßseitige und in etwa auf die Drehachse (3) ausgerichtete Stützfläche (5) in einer Gegenkante (15), die mit der Mantellinie (M) einen Arbeitsspalt (A) begrenzt, der bei Drehung des Drehkörpers (2) von der von den Werkzeugen (W) gebildeten Schlagleiste (L) ausgefüllt wird.
