[origin: EP0421167A2] The invention is concerned with methods and gripper devices, in order to make it possible to pick up, transport and put down limp sheet-like workpieces (1) made of textile material, plastic or other materials graspable by means of needles (3). So that such workpieces (1) can be handled quickly and reliably, even under complicated conditions of space, needle grippers (2) are brought by means of a handling device (5) into a position parallel to the workpiece (1) and, after the workpiece (1) has been grasped, into another position which reduces the workpiece base area and in which the workpiece (1) assumes an approximately loop-like form, the workpiece (1) being transported and put down in this position. <IMAGE>
