[origin: EP0422908A1] An electromagnetically controlled spring clutch mechanism includes a rotatable output member (2), a rotatable input member (4), a coil spring (8) fitted astride the outer peripheral portions of these two members, an armature assembly (10) disposed on the outer peripheral portion of the coil spring (8), and an electromagnetic coil assembly (6). When the electromagnetic coil (40) is deenergized, the coil spring (8) is contracted in a tightening direction, so that the two members are drivingly coupled together. When the electromagnetic coil (40) is energized, rotation of the armature assembly (10) is hampered, and contraction of the coil spring is released, so that the driving-coupling of the two members is released.
