[origin: WO8809910A1] By a spiral tube heat exchanger with a spiral tube (3) wound around the external wall of a vessel (9), with an external shell (6) which envelopes the spiral tube (3) tightly, and the internal surface of which may be provided with an insulating layer of a solid-hardening expanded elastomeric foam (7), a high efficiency is to be ensured, together with low production and maintenance costs and with low cleaning costs. These objectives are achieved with a spiral tube heat exchanger by welding or glueing the individual turns on to the adjacent turns either directly or by spacers, by filling the spiral tube itself (3) with a solid-hardening expanded elastomeric foam (8) such as polyurethane or similar, or expanded mineral silicates such as fibre gypsum or similar ceramic materials and composites.
