[origin: EP0425230A1] A separate socket element (2) having a tapering internal surface (21) is attached to one end of a nipple (1) so as to provide, at its free end, a pipe insertion port (20), the internal diameter of the socket element (2) diminishing towards said port. An insert (3) is slidably fitted in the bore (11) of the nipple (1), and a collet (4) is located inside the socket element (20) around the free end of the insert (3) so that the end margin of a pipe (H) can be gripped between the insert (3) and the collet (4) when inserted therebetween though the part (20). Subsequently, when a pulling force is exerted on the pipe (H), both collet and insert, which engage the pipe, slide towards the port (20) until limited by tapered interfitment of the collet (4) with the internal surface (21) of the socket element (2).
