Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0425736A1] The triggered commutation spark gap consists of two main electrodes, which are insulated from one another, and a trigger electrode which can be driven galvanically and is arranged in the centre of a circular opening in the one main electrode. According to the invention, the distance (a) between the two main electrodes (2, 3) is greater by a factor of 1.1 to 2.3, preferably by a factor of 1.4 to 1.7, than the width (b) of the annular gap (10) between the trigger electrode (6) and the associated main electrode (3); in addition, the circumferential edge of the trigger electrode which is arranged flush with the discharge surface of the associated main electrode has a radius of curvature of less than or equal to 0.1 mm, and the trigger electrode (6) and the associated main electrode (3) are coated with an activation compound (11) containing silver. As a result of the combination of these measures, the delay time of the commutation spark gap can be reduced to values of less than or equal to 0.5 mu s. <IMAGE>
