In einer tragbaren Leuchte (1) ist eine kathodenbeheizbare Leuchtstofflampe (11) vorgesehen, die aus einer wiederaufladbaren Batterie (10) gespeist wird. Zum Aufladen wird die Leuchte (1) mit einem Ladegerät gekuppelt, das in einem ungefährdeten Bereich steht. Das Ladegerät ist mit getrennten Anschlüssen (30, 31; 32, 33) für die Ladespannung (UL) und für das Anlegen einer Heiz- und Zündspannung ausgestattet. Bei Beginn der Wiederaufladephase wird der Batterieversorgungsstromkreis (10, 120,13) für die Lampe (11) unterbrochen. Bei der Entnahme der Leuchte (1) wird der Batterieversorgungsstromkreis geschlossen, eine Heizspannung aus dem Ladegerät zur Verfügung gestellt und an die Kathode (110) der Lampe angelegt. Danach wird die Zündspannung in einer Zündeinrichtung (39) entwickelt und an die Lampenelektroden (111, 110) angelegt. Erst nach Zündung der Lampe wird die Leuchte (1) vom Ladegerät elektrisch abgekoppelt. Die Zündung mit Vorheizung erfolgt also über das Ladegerät.
