[origin: EP0427359A2] The invention relates to a method of accelerated cooling of a heated cylindrical shaped body made of metal rotating about its horizontal longitudinal axis, in particular a steel tube, in which a liquid coolant, in particular water, strikes the shaped body from above in the form of a laminar curtain parallel to the longitudinal axis, approximately in the region of the uppermost generatrix of the said shaped body. In order to provide a method and a device for carrying out the method which permits an increase in the cooling rate beyond that hitherto thought possible or makes possible the same cooling rate with a reduced specific coolant consumption, it is proposed that, to intensify the cooling effect during the first cooling phase, in which the surface temperature of the shaped body is still above the Leidenfrost temperature, the coolant splashing away sideways after striking the surface of the shaped body is intercepted on at least one side of the shaped body, along its entire length, deflected downwards and guided back in an uninterrupted flow onto the surface of the shaped body at the side of the latter. <IMAGE>
