[origin: WO9001178A1] Coating apparatus for applying a coating of one or more layers of coating composition to the surface of a continuous web or discrete sections of sheet material. The apparatus includes a cascade slide hopper to supply coating composition to the coating zone. The layer or layers of coating composition flowing down the slide surfaces of the cascade slide hopper are protected from adverse effects of convection air currents by a shield which is positioned so close to the slide surfaces of the cascade slide hopper as to prevent the creation of thermal connection currents. Preferably, the shield is heated to a temperature equal to or above the temperature of the coating compositions to prevent condensation.
