[origin: EP0429051A1] The drum shearer (2) has vertically adjustable shearing drums at the ends. The shearing drums are driven in rotation from a central electric motor (8). For this, there are drive shafts (10) which extend in a straight line between the electric motor (8) and drum-head gears (11) provided in the region of the pivot axles (6) of the shearing arms (7) assigned to the shearing drums. The drive shafts (10) are enclosed by hollow shafts (18) as integral parts of eddy-current couplings (17). The hollow shafts (18) are connected via gear trains (15) to the gearwheels (13) causing the longitudinal advances of the drum shearer (2). The hollow shafts surrounding the drive shafts (10) can also form an integral part of electric motors extending coaxially relative to the central electric motor (8) in the longitudinal direction of the machine housing (1). <IMAGE>
