[origin: EP0430261A2] Method and device for determining the printing plate occupancy on the printing cylinders of the printing unit of a printing machine. By means of "product planning" and "colour requirement", the scope and colour arrangement of the desired printed product are identified in order to determine which printing plates the printing cylinders for at least one printing unit are to be equipped with. Further, restrictive input values can be contained in the catalogue "system parameters" and "production types". In a first step, a "starting web occupancy" which utilises as far as possible the full width of webs required, is determined as a function of the product and machine. The latter occupancy is extended in a second step by the "web carrying possibilities" of the printing machine. In a third step, the "colour combinations" existing for a web carrying possibility are taken into account. Of these, only those combinations which permit a colour arrangement agreeing as far as possible with the "colour requirement" for the product are used in a fourth step for determining the printing plate occupancy. The printing plate occupancy obtained is available as a "product diagram" or, in accordance with a "colour allocation" of colour arrangements s uperfluous to the "colour requirement", as an "imposition diagram". In order to produce further printing plate occupancies, the fourth, or the third and fourth, step can be at least partially repeated. If required, at the start of the third step, the web carrying possibilities can be converted from web-related to product-related. <IMAGE>
