Abstract (en)
[origin: EP0432506A2] A thermal transfer foil for forming images directly onto a printing cylinder, which comprises a meltable, oleophilic substance on a substrate, from which parts of the substance are melted by the effect of heat for marking colour-bearing image parts of the printing cylinder and transferred to the latter, is provided according to the invention with an intermediate layer of material which can foam or form bubbles under the effect of heat and the response temperature of which for the foaming operation is greater than the melting temperature of the substance. By means of such a thermal transfer foil it is possible to compensate for manufacturing inaccuracies of the printing cylinder, the thermal transfer foil and the picture dot transfer unit, generating the heat energy, which are unavoidable in practice, bringing them down altogether to about 1 mm, as a result of which both the quality and the cost-effectiveness of forming images directly onto printing cylinders by the thermal transfer method are improved considerably. <IMAGE>
