[origin: WO9003449A1] A process and a device are useful for surface hardening of crack-prone work pieces. A clamping or supporting device (2) comprising crack-formation sensors (3) is provided. Any cracks produced when the work piece (1), heated by a heater (5), is quenched by means of the shower (6) are detected and measured by said sensors, which are secured in a heat- and impact-resistant manner to the machine control (MS), with which they co-operate. As a result, individual work pieces (1) can be checked without loss of time, and hardening and crack testing operations can be carried out in a less space-consuming and labour-intensive manner. In addition faster detection of defects reduces the risk of large quantities of rejects.
