[origin: EP0437826A2] An electric cooking plate (14) is built into an installation panel (12) made of glass which is provided on the underside with a partially transparent and partially opaque masking. The underside of the plate is adjoined by an illumination chamber (28) which is lit by a lamp (29). By virtue of the masking, an edge region (33) is created, through which light shines outwards to indicate the operational state of the cooking plate. The installation panel can also consist of opaque material such as sheet metal. In this connection, the light penetrates a transparent seal or other translucent installation components. <IMAGE>
