In order to specify an automatic method and an apparatus for straightening the ends of elongated workpieces, by means of which it is possible to straighten the end of a workpiece in a specific way, even one of varying cross-section, in a simple manner while the workpiece is stationary, it is proposed that, with the workpiece stationary, at least one selected cross-section in the end region be subjected to rising and falling reverse bending stress, a predetermined maximum bend running one or more times around the axis of the workpiece. <IMAGE>
