Abstract (en)
An internal combustion engine which has a piston (2) running in a cylinder (1) has a combustion chamber (6) which communicates with an auxiliary chamber (7). A valve (10) is operable to open or close communication between the combustion chamber (6) and the auxiliary chamber (7) so that the chambers can be in communication during a compression stroke, but can be closed off from one another during combustion so that the compression ratio of the engine is changed without altering the expansion coefficient. <IMAGE>
