To prevent damage during malfunctions and to facilitate maintenance and adjustment work, the securing foot (10) is secured to the carriage (6) via a ratchet device (14). The retaining force of the ratchet device in the direction of travel of the web of material (2) substantially corresponds to the force of the permitted cutting resistance of the cutter (36) in the web (2) in such a way that the cutter is disengaged if the cutting resistance in the web (2) is not the permitted value.
